How to Make Your Own Sewing Patterns

Sewing patterns are very important when it comes to sewing because they will not only save you time and energy, but they will also help to prevent you from ruining your new fabric. They are readily available at fabric stores and are available for just about any sewing project. However, there may be times when you want a particular design that is not available, and therefore, you might have to resort to making your own.

It is not difficult to make your own sewing patterns, but it is a bit time consuming depending on the type of pattern that you wish to make. Some of the materials that you will need are tissue paper, iron, tape, pencil, marker, ruler, and a pair of scissors.

To get started with making your own patterns, you will need to make a drawing of what you want the finished item to look like. From there you will need to transfer it to a tissue paper and make a rough copy with some cheap material. You can sometimes find scrap pieces of material at thrift stores, or you can use an old bed sheet.

This is a trial and error stage as you might often have to adjust the shape, the width and perhaps the length as well. Once all adjustments have been made, then you will once again need to transfer it over to a tissue paper. And this time it will be your good copy.

The tissue paper is available at most dollar stores. It should be a light paper so that the marker will be easy to read. Also, the paper should be pressed with an iron in order for it to be smooth. Any creases left in the paper will distort the pattern later on. If you are working on a large pattern, then you might need to tape several pieces of tissue together.

Another way that you can make a sewing pattern is by taking an old garment or any other old item and rip it apart at the seams. Then all you have to do is iron those pieces out and lay them on top of the tissue paper in order to trace the exact design. This will save you a lot of time as you won’t have to make a drawing of it first.

At first it might take you a while to get the pattern right where you want it to be, but after you make a few patterns, you will gain a greater understanding as to how the patterns work and thus it will become much easier for you.
